Three weeks ago, YouTube video essayist Jenny Nicholson shared her latest opus, My Favorite Twilight Knockoff. In it, she describes/reviews/dissects Incubus, a 2011 film written by, starring, and co-directed by then-teenage wunderkind Shayne Leighton.
Incubus seems to have been mostly forgotten; while Nicholson’s essay says the DVD – which she bought used at Blockbuster – isn’t hard to come by, that has turned out to be decidedly less true since almost two million people watched Nicholson’s video and, presumably, a decent chunk of them decided to buy themselves a copy.
Something else that’s near-impossible to find? The film’s soundtrack which – surprise! – was also done by Leighton. But according to a post on Threads, Leighton is working on making it available again.
“Important announcement about The Incubus soundtrack pending,” Leighton promised fans yesterday on Sunday, before thanking Marcie Sothern Gorman-Althof, who helped finance the original film, “for helping me to bring back a bit of Spoon River Magic to those who were looking for it.”
(Spoon River is the name of the town in which The Incubus takes place – a wink and a nod to Forks, Washington, where Twilight was set.)
There are no firm details yet. It seems likely that the tracks will be available to stream, and hopefully to purchase digitally. Of course, depending on demand it wouldn’t be outside the realm of possibility to see a small print run for the soundtrack CD, a DVD of the movie, or both.
Emerald City Video has reached out to Leighton for details, but we have not yet heard back.
In the years since Incubus was released, Leighton has never again directed a feature film, but she has kept her creative spark alive, in part by writing the novels Of Light and Darkness and Of Blood and Magic.
