The DC Universe’s “Superman Saga” expands in 2027 with a new film from DC Studios co-chief James Gunn. With the working title Man of Tomorrow, Gunn and members of the film’s cast announced a sequel to this summer’s Superman film, coming in two years and starring Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and David Corenswet as Superman.

Gunn shared an image on social media, drawn by Jim Lee, which features Corenswet’s Superman standing alongside Lex Luthor, with the villain wearing his fan-favorite green battle armor.

The movie will release on July 9, 2027 — roughly two years after the relase of Superman and a year after 2026’s Supergirl, which stars Milly Alcock as the Girl of Steel. During a recent interview, Gunn intimated that he had a story to tell that involved watching Corenswet’s Superman evolve over four films. Some have taken this to mean the star will get four solo Superman movies, but it seems equally plausible that any Super-family movie in which he appears is one of those four.

Of course, considering the offhanded phrasing, it’s probably a mistake to take “four movies” too literally anyway. You can see the full context and conversation with The Viall Files below.

Putting Lex Luthor into the powersuit is a recurring thing in the comics, but has rarely been adapted to screen. Jon Cryer’s Lex Luthor got a turn in the armor on Supergirl and Michael Cudlitz very briefly tooled around in a suit of armor on Superman & Lois, but other than that any adaptations of the look have been limited to animation.

“Man of Tomorrow” is one of a number of nicknames given to Superman in the comics, and has been used as the subtitle of an ongoing, quarterly comic book in the 1990s as well as an animated feature film in 2020. the latter featured Lobo, who is set to make his first big-screen appearance in Supergirl, where the character will be played by Justice League star Jason Momoa.

The focus on Luthor and his armored suit in the promotional material has fans and journalists assuming Hoult will take center stage, although Gunn had said nothing about that yet. Hoult, who auditioned to play Superman but lost out to Cornswet, has drawn critical praise for his portrayal of the villain.

The most popular theory on social media is that Superman and Lex will have to suit up and fight a common threat, with popular candidates being General Zod and Brainiac. Given that Lex fought Superman by proxy in Superman by cloning a version of the hero without free will and puppeteering “Ultraman” through fights, one could assume that if there is a team-up, it’s an afterthought, and that the armor was created to let Lex lay hands on Superman (and his little dog, too).

Aside from Supergirl, DC Studios is also currently hard at work on Clayface, a movie that centers on the shapeshifting Batman villain. Set in Gunn’s DC Universe, behind-the-scenes shots from Clayface have been leaking all week on social media, showing minor differences between the Gotham City of the DCU and the one seen in Matt Reeves’s The Batman.

Supergirl is set for release on June 26, 2026 in theaters, followed by Clayface on September 11. After Man of Tomorrow‘s July 2027 release, Reeves’s The Batman Part II will finally roll out on October 1.
