Day three of the 12 days of Christmas-ish movies we’re watching the Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson dramedy, In Bruges.

In Bruges is a film that that did decently well, making twice it’s budget back at the box office when it was released in 2008. Since then it has slowly gained a of a cult following.

Farell and Gleeson are an unlikely duo sent to Bruges to hide out after a hired killing go wrong. They’re booked into an inn over the Christmas holiday causing the place to be booked up, so there is only one room available for the both of them. This Odd Couple-ing scenario forces much of the story to play out with them spending time in their (actually quite spacious) twin bed room.

While the film doesn’t hammer home Christmas decor – the European holiday town does have trees and lights all around. This combo allows me to put this, my favorite Colin Farrell film as day three of the Christmas-ish holiday list.

If you haven’t seen it, you’re in for a treat. It’s got some of the best lines delivered in cinema history and Ralph Fiennes playing an incredibly foul-mouthed gangster.

An example:

Ken [Brendan Gleeson]: Harry, let’s face it. And I’m not being funny. I mean no disrespect, but you’re a cunt. You’re a cunt now, and you’ve always been a cunt. And the only thing that’s going to change is that you’re going to be an even bigger cunt. Maybe have some more cunt kids.
Harry [Ralph Fiennes]: [furious] Leave my kids fucking out of it! What have they done? You fucking retract that bit about my cunt fucking kids!
Ken: I retract that bit about your cunt fucking kids.
Harry: Insult my fucking kids? That’s going overboard, mate!
Ken: I retracted it, didn’t I?

The film begins as a comedy, heads into a drama and ends as a messy (occasionally gruesome) action film. There might be a couple moments for the faint of heart to look away but this is a film that has something for everyone… maybe wait til the kids are in bed. Unless of course you want little Johnnie to go to school tomorrow with a new vocabulary.
