What ever happened to Danny from Hey Dude?
That’s a question that has come up time and time again over the course of the last thirty or so years. The actor, Joe Torres, stepped out of the limelight years ago and proved impossible to track down for things like reunions, documentaries, or the Mathew Klickstein book Slimed, an oral history of early Nickelodeon. And, soon, we’re going to get the answer.
That’s because a planned virtual Hey Dude reunion — which will bring the cast of the beloved ’90s teen sitcom back to the ranch where it was filmed for the first time in decades — has Torres making a rare public appearance. And, yes, the promoters know exactly what a big deal that is for fans:
The reunion springs out of Hey Dude…the ’90s Called, a podcast co-hosted by Hey Dude stars David Lascher and Christine Taylor. While rewatch podcasts featuring cast members have become a subgenre unto themselves after the success of things like Office Ladies and Fake Doctors, Real Friends, the Hey Dude team do something a little different: they discuss ’90s nostalgia generally, not just their own show, and play host to guests ranging from Ben Stiller (Taylor’s husband) to Adam Scott (no, he is not married to Lascher).
In addition to Torres, the cast reunion — which will take place at the Tanque Verde Ranch in Tucson, Arizona — will feature “the full cast.” They haven’t nailed down exactly who that is, but it will presumably include at least Josh Tygiel, David Brisbin, and Kelly Brown.
This is the second post in a row that has covered a nostalgic TV series, and by happy coincidence there is once again a PushingUpRoses video to share about it. So, if you don’t have background in Hey Dude, you’re welcome:
A 25th anniversary reunion held in 2014 featured David Lascher, Geoffrey Coy, Debrah Kalman, Josh Tygiel, Christine Taylor, David Brisbin and Jonathan Galkin. In the years since the show ended, Torres’s private nature has spurred rumors that he had died or gone “off the grid,” lending the actor a kind of urban legend status among hardcore fans.
The reunion will take place on January 31 at 4 p.m. ET. You can get tickets here. Purchasing a ticket will give you access to a private stream, and there will be a drawing for three fans to win a meet-up with Lascher and Taylor at a later date.
