Jessica Fletcher is heading for the big screen.
Halloween and Freaky Friday star Jamie Lee Curtis will star in a feature film adaptation of the beloved TV mystery series Murder, She Wrote, Deadline reports.
In the series, which ran from 1984 until 1996, Angela Lansbury (Gaslight, Bedknobs and Broomsticks) starred as Fletcher, a retired teacher who now writes popular murder mysteries and solves real-world crimes using the skills she developed doing so.
The show remained popular in syndication for years after it went off the air, and remains a fan-favorite even now. For the last six years, one of the best things on YouTube has been the That Time on Murder, She Wrote… series from creator PushingUpRoses.
Given how closely associated Lansbury is with the character, it’s likely a pretty tall ask to get anybody involved in this project. Curtis, though, is both Hollywood royalty and a performer beloved by a younger generation who revere her franchise work on Halloween and Freaky Friday. If anybody can make a Murder, She Wrote movie work, Curtis is a solid candidate.
Pitch Perfect director Jason Moore is set to helm the film from a screenplay by Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo. The writing duo, best known for writing Dumb Money, also have the basketball movie Rise, about the founding of American women’s basketball leagues.
Moore has a loaded schedule coming up; he’s set to direct the pilot of Elle, Prime Video’s planned Legally Blonde prequel series, as well as the revival of Avenue Q on London’s West End.
Producers on the project include Amy Pascal, LEGO Movie filmmakers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, and Aditya Sood. Lord and Miller have a first-look deal with Universal, whose TV division owns the Murder, She Wrote rights (writes?). Universal’s SVP Development Lexi Barta and Director of Production Development Jacqueline Garell will tackle it for the studio.
