DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures have released the first full teaser trailer for Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock in the title role she originated in this summer’s blockbuster Superman.

Craig Gillespie (Cruella) directs the film from a screenplay by Ana Nogueira, who has quickly become a key part of executive James Gunn’s creative brain trust, with work on upcoming projects based on Teen Titans and Wonder Woman.

You can see the trailer below.

The movie is based loosely on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the miniseries and best-selling graphic novel from writer Tom King and artist Bilquis Evely. In it, Supergirl heads to space on a quest for revenge on behalf of a young alien girl who has lost everything. The series serves as kind of an unofficial companion piece to Superman: Up in the Sky, a sci-fi adventure King also wrote (which was illustrated by Andy Kubert).

In the final frames of the trailer, Supergirl directs readers to pick up a copy of Superman: Woman of Tomorrow, which recently came out in DC’s inexpensive “compact comics” format.

Supergirl, DC Studios’ newest feature film to hit the big screen, will be in theaters worldwide this summer from Warner Bros. Pictures, starring Milly Alcock in the dual role of Supergirl/Kara Zor-El.

When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice.

Alcock stars alongside Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, and Jason Momoa.

DC Studios heads Peter Safran and James Gunn are producing the film, which is based on characters from DC, Supergirl based on characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. The film is executive produced by Nigel Gostelow, Chantal Nong Vo and Lars P. Winther. Behind the camera, Gillespie is joined by director of photography Rob Hardy, production designer Neil Lamont, editor Tatiana S. Riegel, costume designer Anna B. Sheppard, Visual Effects Supervisor Geoffrey Baumann, and composer Ramin Djawadi.
